Textbooks:

"Statics" by R.C. Hibbeler Pearson 15th edition.

Prerequisites:

Physics 221 and Math 151, both with 2.0 or better.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to do the following:

  • Identify and classify forces and moments in a variety of engineering situations and draw the corresponding free-body diagrams.
  • Solve problems in two and three-dimensional equilibrium problems by summing vector forces and moments.
  • Solve problems for forces in structures using the methods of joints and sections
  • Calculate centroids and moments of inertia for two-dimensional shapes.
  • Solve problems with static and kinetic friction.

Course Content:

Vectors
Components of Force and Free Body Diagrams
Moments and Couples
Equilibrium of Rigid Bodies / Trusses, Frames and Machines
Centroids and Center of Gravity
Friction
Internal Forces / Axial, Shear, Bending Moments
Moment of Inertia

We should cover thoroughly chapters 1 through 6, and some of the contents of chapters 7 through 10.

Grading:

Homework: 30%
Bridge project + presentation: 20 %
Quizzes (4 one-hour quizzes, lowest score is dropped): 50%

Exams:

There will be four one hour exams. The exams will be administered on a given day and time posted on the class calendar and must be taken on that day during that time window. There will not be any make-up exams. If you miss one exam, that exam score will be the one that is dropped.

Homework:

Homework problems are posted on MasteringEngineering. Typically, there are three assignments per week due on Mondays by 11:59 pm (pre-reading questions), on Wednesdays and Saturdays by 11:59 pm (homework problems). To access the homework sets, sign up for MasteringEngineering by following these instructions.

Though you may discuss how to approach a problem with other students in the class (and I encourage you to do so), your final work has to be yours.

You may complete any MasteringEngineering assignment late. However, there is a penalty of 5% per late day, up to a maximum of 30%.

Bridge project:

A key part of the Engineering profession is to apply what you learn in school to a practical situations. In this class, you will be asked to design, build, and analyze a bridge (details).

Special Assistance:

Students with documented disabilities requesting class accommodations, requiring special arrangements in case of building evacuation, or have emergency medical information the instructor should know about are asked to contact the disability support services office (DSS.Central@seattlecolleges.edu). Once the disability is verified with DSS you will be given a letter of accommodation to be handed to your instructor.

Title IX:

Seattle Central College seeks to provide an environment that is free of bias, discrimination, and harassment.  If you have been the victim of sexual harassment/misconduct/assault we encourage you to report this. For more information about your options at Seattle Central, please go to: http://seattlecolleges.edu/HR/about.aspx

My contract to you!

If you attend class, do your homework and genuinely try to learn the concepts, I promise you to do my best to make your time as valuable as I can!
